Why Working College students Need Support

The role of working students in the college community has grown. While many people choose to work because they need the money to support their families or themselves, others work in order to become financially independent, develop their careers, or make extra money. Regardless of their motivation. Juggling work and school requirements poses particular difficulties that may have an impact on their general college experience, academic success, and well-being. Despite their increasing numbers, working students frequently face challenges due to a lack of institutional support and resources that are specifically designed to meet their needs.

Sidney Cobb\u2019s social support theory states that supportive relationships shield people from the negative mental, physical, and emotional effects of life\u2019s stresses and serves as a foundation for this study. While colleges are often seen as a time for students to pursue their dreams and get ready for their future jobs, working students have to manage both their jobs and academic responsibilities. Therefore, they face stressors like time management issues, harsh work schedules, financial obligations, and the difficulty of maintaining their academic expectations. These stressors can lead to fatigue, burnout, depression, and poorer academic performance.

Emotional support, esteem support, and a network of mutual obligation and communication are the three primary pillars of social support. Obtaining care, support, encouragement, and a sense of community from others is referred to as emotional support. In order to help someone feel valued despite the difficulties they encounter, esteem support includes acknowledging and appreciating their efforts and contributions. Lastly, a network of communication and shared responsibilities makes information, resources, and people who can offer assistance when required.

The study looks for a doable and reasonably priced program that colleges can implement to assist working students by applying the principles of the social support theory. Working students can manage stress, adapt to the demands of balancing work and school, and overall improve their academic performance, well-being, and overall college experience by strengthening institutional, academic, and emotional support networks.

Despite the fact that working students have different reasons for looking for work, they all struggle to balance their obligations to their jobs and studies. Employment demands the time and effort from working students that could be used for their studies, classes, or participating in campus events, regardless of whether a student works to support their family, financially support themselves, or become financially independent, earn extra allowance, or develop professional experience. This balancing act can worsen academic performance, increase stress levels, and limit chances for resting.

Due to this, institutional support should be taken into consideration with the difficulties that come with balancing work and school rather than just a student's financial situation. Working students can manage these demands with the support of flexible academic policies, easily accessible mental health services, tutoring programs, and specialized support networks, allowing them to excel academically while still fulfilling their work obligations.

The challenges faced by working students are widely known, and several programs by the Philippine government are created to financially support vulnerable students. Programs like the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation or AICS by DSWD provide emergency assistance during difficult times, while programs like the Special Program for the Employment of Students or SPES from DOLE offer temporary employment opportunities. TEDSA  Scholarship Programs encourage skill development and vocational training, and finally, the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act or UAQTEA and CHED Merit Scholarship Program or CMSP offer free tuition and scholarship assistance to lessen the cost of higher education. These programs can offer helpful financial and educational support, but they mainly assist with economic needs and educational access rather than balancing work and school. What can Colleges do?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Ang Working Scholar offers a number of programs, policies, events, and seminars that aim to address the needs of working students. For institutions that are seeking to help working students more effectively provide support, there are programs that are designed to be accessible for colleges and universities with tight budgets while still being flexible enough to accommodate the needs of the student population.

There are 3 collections of programs available to choose from: Steady Schola, which deals with balancing work and academics and offers programs that will allow for balancing work and school, such as attending time management seminars, providing early registration programs, and even the FLEX Program. Work Well Scholar assists with the mental health of working students, where an active helpline can assist students by checking in on them on a daily basis, and counseling can be provided in a timely manner before anything turns for the worse. The Working Scholar Resource Network aids in implementing proper support systems by offering academic help via a tutoring program or by deferring one's tuition payment until their paycheck arrives.
