Depending on their schedules, many of these students attend classes during the day and work during the night. There are a variety of reasons for needing to work, such as providing for their families and paying for their own education while developing their portfolios and gaining useful work experience. Regardless of their motives, students encounter certain difficulties in balancing both responsibilities. Their experiences, motives, and challenges as working students are discussed in this article along with the significance of creating support systems that help them thrive academically and professionally.

Facts About Working Students

The Philippines had roughly 216,00 working students, or 8% of all college students, according to a 2022 study from Mapua Malayan Digital College. Of these students, 80% maintain full academic loads while balancing work and school, and 44% work full time while taking classes. 77% of students work to support their families, and 75% report that they live paycheck to paycheck, as financial responsibilities continue to be one of the main reasons students look for work. Students who have to balance their schoolwork and the need to earn money.

Though not all working students are driven by a need for money, the same study cites that 52.9% of students responded that career advancement, personal development, and gaining work experience were reasons for continuing to work despite balancing school being a challenge. This shows how work can give students chances to hone their future careers. However, when students don’t have enough time or resources to balance both obligations, the advantages of working can also create serious problems. This shows how jobs can offer working students valuable chances to improve their skills and prepare for their future jobs. Despite this, balancing work and school can create challenges that have an impact on a working student's general well-being and academic performance.

Our survey of 48 working students shows these challenges. In terms of academic performance, 58.3% of working students have an average between 79 and 89, however, 83% stated that they struggle with some of their subjects, while 6.3% struggled with most of their subjects. This implies that while many working students can maintain passing grades, the majority still struggle to meet their academic responsibilities.

These struggles become serious enough to threaten students' ability to stay in college. According to the 2022 study, long-term burnout, demanding work schedules, academic workloads, long commute times, and the need to support themselves or their families were the reasons why 45.2% of working students have thought about leaving their studies to engage in full-time work. This shows how important it is to have support networks that cater to the unique challenges experienced by working students. Though 70.8% of working students agree that their college offers enough support, others are unsure or state that the current support doesn’t apply to all working students; 18.8% were neutral on the matter, and 10.4% have responded that colleges do not provide proper support.

This implies that though many students are aware of the assistance that their schools offer, current policies might not properly address the challenges faced by all working students. Overall, the results emphasize the need for stronger and easily accessible institutional support systems that can help working students in balancing their work, studies, and general well-being.

Types of Working Students

Working students do not all have the same reasons for looking for work. According to our research and the interviews we’ve conducted, we found out there are different types of working students. Many students work to support their families financially or to help pay for their daily living expenses, school supplies, transportation, tuition, and other costs. Others decide to work in order to become financially independent once they graduate, which enables them to develop solid money management skills and support themselves without being totally dependent on their parents or guardians.

However, some students choose to work in order to gain additional allowances even though they aren’t facing any financial difficulties. They can use this extra money for savings, hobbies, personal expenses, or future education. Before graduating, some students work solely to build their resumes, acquire practical skills, gain professional experience, and make connections in the industry. Instead of seeing work as a need for money, these students see it as an opportunity for their future careers.

Working students face different challenges and require different kinds of support due to their different motivations. While students working for experience benefit more from career-oriented opportunities, internships, and academic accommodations help them balance their professional and academic responsibilities, those working out of financial necessity may require financial assistance, flexible academic policies, or emergency aid. Instead of treating all working students as if they all have the same circumstances, colleges can implement programs that cater to the varied needs of the working student population by acknowledging these differences.

Conclusion

Students who come from different backgrounds have plenty of reasons for balancing work and school. Some people work because they need the funds to support their families or themselves, while others do so in order to advance their careers, develop personally, or become financially independent. Despite these differences, many students still face similar challenges such as time constraints, sleep deprivation, academic pressure, and the challenge of being able to healthily balance work and school.

The statistics in this article show a large percentage of college students are employed; many of them deal with situations that harm their general well-being as well as their academic performance. These results highlight how important it is to understand that not all working students' needs can be met with one solution. Colleges should instead create flexible and easily accessible support systems that cater to the various needs and motivations of their students.

College students can support working students' success in and out of the classroom by implementing programs like Steady Scholar, Work Well Scholar, and Working Students Resource Network. This will encourage students to invest in both their personal development and accomplishments to create a more inclusive student learning environment where students can realize their full potential.

 <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-307dcbe e-con e-atomic-element e-flexbox-base e-default-div e-b4c06be " data-id="307dcbe" data-element_type="e-flexbox"
